Our programs for stray animals in India are joint projects of the Visakah Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (VSPCA) and NetAP. The aim of these programs is to improve the living conditions of street animals in and around Visakhapatnam.

Street animals are omnipresent in India. Street dogs in particular are a constant source of conflict on the subcontinent. Some love them, others hate them. When there are dog fights, voices are immediately raised calling for large-scale culls. Although killings are prohibited, they take place in many regions. The fear of the deadly disease rabies in particular fuels hatred of dogs and leads to such drastic measures.

The only solution is consistent population management by means of a castration and vaccination program. Neutering prevents offspring and therefore future suffering. Vaccinations not only protect the dogs, but also the people.

The suffering of street cats is just as great as the misery of dogs, except that they are generally not perceived as a danger by the population and therefore the state does not intervene. However, as cats have no status in India, they are regarded as pests and are treated accordingly, chased away or even killed.

Street cows are also a prominent feature of the Indian landscape. As the slaughter of cows is largely prohibited, cows that are not (or no longer) of use are regularly abandoned. Malnutrition and road traffic bring many an animal to an agonizing end. We are also focusing our attention on them.

Thanks to these long-standing programs, the misery of these animals in our area of operation in Visakhapatnam, on the Bay of Bengal, has been successfully reduced.
