Cat Distress in Switzerland

Almost 1.9 million cats live in Switzerland. And the tendency is rising. The suffering of cats in Switzerland is enormous. Thousands of cats vegetate on farms, factory sites, in housing developments, garden centers, allotment gardens and many other places.

Every year, an estimated 100,000 young animals are drowned, suffocated, beaten to death, gassed or shot because they are unwanted and those responsible shy away from the cost of neutering them or deliberately refrain from neutering or spaying them, whether for reasons of superstition, misunderstood religion, indifference or misunderstanding. Many animals also die of disease, are killed by traffic or shot by hunters. (Projections of cat killings in Switzerland)

Ignorant or indifferent private individuals exacerbate the situation by making sure their cat has kittens at least once. Even if places are found for the offspring, the number of cats increases continuously, spaces for shelter animals or animal welfare cases are filled and some of these deliberately “produced” kittens will also end up in the shelter or on the street at some point. However, neutering or spaying in good time would only have advantages.(Leaflet: Information on neutering or spaying your cat)

You can find our locations on this map. Please note that we have already been in action several times in many places and have caught and neutered and spayed well over 100 cats in some villages. In a few regions of Switzerland we are not (yet) active due to a lack of volunteers and/or veterinarians with an affinity for animal welfare.

The only sustainable solution to the suffering of cats is consistent neutering and spaying. This is why NetAP not only neuters and spays cats from almost all cantons in Switzerland on an ongoing basis, but also campaigns for a national neutering and spaying requirement for outdoor cats.
