Farm animal welfare

Activities > Farm animal welfare

While animal welfare is becoming more and more established with regard to dogs and cats, the protection of “farm” animals is often only advanced slowly and only to the extent that it can maintain or improve the performance and utilisation of animals by humans. This deliberately neglects the fact that all animals feel fear, pain, stress, grief and suffering. They form bonds with their conspecifics and children and suffer the pain of separation. That is why they deserve our protection.

Our commitment

We are committed to improving the living conditions of so-called farm animals in various ways. We focus on education and knowledge transfer. We also run our own projects and support third parties in selected programmes. We also campaign for the protection of the rights of these animals through legal channels and call for their rights to be improved through political channels. Finally, we run a life farm and rescue individual animals who, by sharing their very own story, contribute to the suffering of animals and thus to raising public awareness.

Exploitation and cruel transport

The rearing and transport of animals that are used for human consumption must be as efficient as possible. This is why they are transported alive, even if some of the animals die in the process, because it is still profitable for the producers. Slaughtering on site and transporting the meat products would be too expensive, especially because of the refrigeration. Investments are also made in special feed, special medicines, special lighting systems and transport systems. The welfare and specific needs of the animals are ignored and any individuality is denied them. The only thing that counts is profit. Advancing globalisation has also led to a massive increase in animal transport and the distances involved. The business with the “commodity” animal is flourishing. The number of animals slaughtered worldwide each year is between 40 and 90 billion, depending on the source. This does not include marine animals, which are estimated at one trillion (not including victims who die as bycatch). The figures also do not include animals that die before they are slaughtered, either because they are disposed of as a “by-product” or die prematurely during use or transport.

Bringing about legislative change is very difficult. Everywhere in the world. The economic interests are far too great. Despite regular massive protests, there are hardly any improvements, for example, with regard to animal transport in Europe. There is also a lot wrong with animal husbandry. The minimum legal requirements do not even begin to fulfil the needs of the animals. And too often, not even these limits are adhered to because the penalties for breaking the rules are not enough of a deterrent!

We continue to campaign for at least existing laws to be complied with and for the issue of animal husbandry and animal transport to remain an issue at political, official and consumer level. Until factory farming and animal transport are a thing of the past.
