Animal Shelters in Menorca
There are two state-run animal shelters on the Balearic island of Menorca. According to the animal rights law, animals are killed 21 days after they are admitted to a shelter. In order to keep the number of animals as low as possible, NetAP carries out several spaying and neutering campaigns on the island each year. During these campaigns, we also visit the state-rund shelters and treat the dogs and cats that otherwise hardly ever receive any veterinarian care at all. We also do our utmost to bring about a change for the better in terms of how the animals are kept and treated.
The "Tanca" is a cat rescue station close to Ciutadella where abandoned cats find a new home. The people who run the Tanca not only take in abandoned cats or foundlings, but also very often rescue cats from the state-run animal shelters before they are being killed. The Tanca is the only rescue station of its kind on the island of Menorca.
With finances and personnel resources being very limited, the Tanca is overburdened with its 200 cats. The rescue center needs to be restructured and renovated.
Together with the owners, NetAP has come up with a step-by-step plan to transform the Tanca into a well-organized modern cat station.
In a first step, all cats are tested, microchipped and vaccinated. New enclosures separate the ill cats from the healthy ones. All enclosures feature a large, weather-resistant garden shed that offers shelter against the weather. All volunteer workers are trained in terms of hygiene. In addition, a quarantine station and a house for medical treatments will be built.
This is a long-term project, as there are no financial means for paid workers. Therefore, we can carry out the improvements on a step-by-step basis only. This being said, we are convinced that we will be able to have a positive impact on the cats lives in the long run.
